Biography

Dr. KONG Kian Hau is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Dr. Kong graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree with First Class Honors and a Ph.D in Civil Engineering from NUS in 1999 and 2004 respectively. He completed his M.Sc (Course works) in Advance Reinforced Concrete Design, Advance Prestressed Concrete Design, Advance Structural Steel Design and Dynamics Analysis & Earthquake Design of Buildings with overall CAP of 4.75 (out of 5). He served as an NUS Graduate Tutor (2000-2002) and was awarded the NUS President Graduate Fellowship in 2002 for PhD candidates who show exceptional promise or accomplishment in research . His PhD Thesis focused on far-field effects of long distance earthquake tremors from Sumatra to Buildings in Singapore. This research work contributed a part to the development of BC3: 2013 and SS EN 1998-1:2013 (Singapore’s National Annex to Eurocode 8). Dr. Kong also worked as NUS Research Engineer & Research Fellow (2003-2005) on the NUS-BCA collaboration Research Project on "High Strength Lightweight Concrete with and without Aggregates".

Since 2005, Dr. Kong has been a practicing qualified engineer, specializing in Buildings & Infrastructure Projects (including Bridges). He is a Chartered Engineer & International Professional Engineer (UK) with 13 years of experience as a Site & Resident Engineer, Senior Design & Project Engineer, Design & Project Manager, Associate (Team Leader) & Senior Associate Consultant for many residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, infrastructure and civil engineering master planning works in Singapore and overseas. He has passed all the Professional Engineers Board (PEB) Singapore prescribed Fundamentals of Civil Engineering (FEE) and Eurocode based 2017 Practise of Professional Engineering (PPE Part 1 & 2) prerequisite examinations for registration as a Professional Engineer in Singapore. In 2012, he was one of the invited speakers in the co-joint Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES) & Institution of Structural Engineers United Kingdom (IStructE) Seminar for Design and Construction of Tall Building with the topic, "Basic General Analysis and Design Considerations for Tall Buildings". In 2017, Dr. Kong was invited to be one of the lecturers for the IES-IStructE Two Day Course on Seismic Design on EC8 with the topic, “Overstrength and Ductility of RC Shear-Wall Frame Buildings Not Designed For Seismic Loads”. Dr. Kong is currently one of the Panel Members of the Global Seismic and Dynamic Events (since 2016) in IStructE and an Editor (2012-2015) & Co-Editor (2016-Present) for “THE STRUCTURALIST” newsletter for the IStructE Singapore Regional Group.
